A Very Chuffed Potato

Alex and I are well into our second month of living in Edinburgh, and the city is definitely more “home” than just a holiday location now. Part of that is due to the fact that WE FOUND A FLAT.

That’s right, Alex and I are proud (and to be honest, relieved) renters of a gorgeous wee flat in Dean Village.

We only collected the keys this morning, so you’ll have to wait a week or two for a flat tour, but for now here’s a photo of me (looking too keen as always) in front of the entrance to our flat’s stairwell.

And here’s the same stairwell on the Wikipedia page for Dean Village, our flat’s gorgeous neighbourhood.

The flat is part of a building complex commissioned by Sir John Findlay in the 1880s to house his workers (because he was sick at looking at their gross tenements). This name will pop up again in an upcoming blog post, but for now you just need to know that he was the owner of The Scotsman newspaper and all around “enlightened” Edinburgh lad.

When we went to look at Dean Village this time last month, at the beginning of our flat hunt, I honestly didn’t really think that we’d end up living here. It’s such a stunning part of the city, so close to the centre and yet simultaneously so quiet and tucked away. One of my friends has lived in Edinburgh for almost 4 years now, and she’d never been to Dean Village! And yet, through a series of quite unanticipated events, here we are.

What kind of magical fairytale land is this?

Even just visiting Dean Village fills me with excitement and inspiration. I can practically hear all the creative and historical ideas bumbling around in my head whenever I visit. I can only imagine what it will be like actually living in such a gorgeous part of the world.

Hopefully, this new-found inspiration will benefit you all. I really want to get back into blogging on a regular basis, and maybe even starting up a few series/themed blogs to give me a bit of direction. I have one or two ideas of some historical themes already in place, but if there’s anything you want me to write about, let me know! Want me to review touristy attractions in Edinburgh and tell you if they’re worth it? Find the best *insert food item here* in the city? Share photos of this beautiful city? I’m open to pretty much any and all suggestions!

For now though, I’m off the stare like a creep out the living room window and watch the snow fall.
