May, it seems, has been the month of old friends.
In the middle of the month, one of my high school classmates was visiting Edinburgh for a week. We weren’t particularly close friends in school, but, as so often happens, in adulthood we have a lot more in common than we might have expected. It’s always lovely to see her, but having her here in Edinburgh was wonderful. She’s been to Edinburgh before, so we just did a lot of wandering, drinking coffee/cider, and chatting. I must say, I was sad to see her go, but the reunion video of her and her dog on Facebook was so cute I nearly cried.
Then, on Wednesday (aka the 31st), one of my friends from Germany came over to Edinburgh. We met at the Cambridge Summer School in 2014 (omg is that 3 years ago? wtf), and caught up again in Germany in 2015. He had never been to Edinburgh, and it was fun to show someone around the city who was seeing it for the first time. Not everything went entirely to plan, but nothing is better than seeing an old friend after a few years apart and finding that nothing has changed.
Both visits were interrupted with me being slightly (or, in the case of the first friend, severely) under the weather, but we still made the most of the time we had. I have amazing friends over here, but there’s something nice about bringing people from your past into your present, even if it’s only for a day or two.
Next month, it’s Alex’s turn, as he has a college friend coming up for a few days. I’m already mentally preparing for the shenanigans.
